Behind Every Journey is a Story:
Back on September 9, 1977, Howard Lee, then NC Secretary of Natural Resources and Community Development, proposed the idea of a "state trail from the mountains to the coast, a trail leading through communities as well as natural areas."
Fast forward to today, this vision has become a reality with the Mountains-to-Sea Trail (MST) which spans 1,175 miles across North Carolina from the Great Smoky Mountains to the Outer Banks. The Friends of the MST is the non-profit organization that helps build, maintain and promote the trail. Through their combined efforts with volunteers, donors, public land agencies, and private landowners, nearly 700 miles of trail were created over the last 40 years where people can walk and enjoy NC mountains, Piedmont farms, coastal towns, and seashores!
The MST captures the imagination of people who find peace and renewal in the out-of-doors and are sparked with the idea of being part of something bigger than they are.
