This coffee comes from the Ichamama Factory (or Wet Mill) in Karuthi, a small growing area within the Nyeri County region of Kenya. Karuthi is conveniently situated between two rivers providing a great source of fresh water that’s used to grow and process coffee and tea.
 
Roughly about 1126 family-owned farms are organized around the Ichamama Factory, which is named after the river that flows along the fertile foothills of the Aberdare mountain range. These are truly smallholder farms of less than half-acre plots with roughly 250 coffee trees. The Othaya Farmers Co-operative Society manages the Ichamama Factory and assists the farmers with production resources and access to global markets for their remarkable beans. The cooperative also supports the farmers with income diversity, supporting crops of bananas, gravelia, and macadamia trees that form a shade canopy over the coffee crop.
 
Our Kenya AA Karuthi is graded AA, which is a coffee grading term that refers to a specific, larger than normal, bean size. Kenya AA coffee beans, for example, pass through Grade 18 (18/64" diameter) sieve perforations, but are too large to pass through Grade 16 (16/64" diameter) sieve perforations. 
 
Considered to be one of the world's finest specialty coffees, Kenya AA coffee beans are usually grown at elevations higher than 6,600 feet above sea level in fertile, volcanic soil.

Some Kenya AA coffees are light-bodied yet still very bright and exhibit a floral aroma. Tones of fruit and wine are often present, and this is almost always balanced by an acidity that is crisp and refreshing, one of the reasons this is one of the world's finest gourmet coffees.
