The Ija’tz cooperative is located in San Lucas Toliman on the shores of Lake Atitlan. Ija’tz, meaning “seed” in Kaqchikel, is a symbol of life and regeneration. In 1995, 50 indigenous small holder farmers came together with a goal of protecting their land and the surrounding environment. They developed a seed bank of native plant species in order to revitalize traditional agricultural products, and knew the importance of growing coffee under these native shade trees. After devastation in 2010 by Tropical Storm Agatha, the cooperative focused their efforts to rebuild and address local environmental issues of flooding and erosion caused by deforestation and development.
De La Gente began working with the Ijatz community in 2015, inspired by their story of resilience. DLG knew they had the capacity to produce quality coffee, and began assisting them through training and financing to continue rebuilding their community and coffee production.
About De La Gente:
DE LA GENTE (DAY LAH HEN'-TAY) MEANS "FROM THE PEOPLE" & THAT'S EXACTLY WHAT OUR COFFEE IS.
GREAT COFFEE. DIRECT FROM FARMERS. CHANGING LIVES.
De la Gente works with coffee farming communities to create economic opportunity that improves the quality of life for their families and communities.
Ask people in Guatemala what they want most and they won't mention aid or charity. What they want are opportunities - to education, to financing, to build businesses - so they can be self-sufficient and provide for their families. They have the intelligence, drive, and desire to succeed, but lack the specific training, education, and access to markets to sell their products.
De la Gente helps create the access needed to succeed and prosper. By providing the people with whom we work the necessary skills, knowledge, and tools, we are able to work together to create sustainable and profitable businesses with long-term viability. With increased income, they are able to invest in the education, healthcare, housing and nutrition needed for healthy and thriving communities.
