The diverse topography of our state is an understated treasure, equal parts unassuming and magnificent. Moving from west to east, North Carolina has an extraordinary panorama that descends from the majestic peaks of the Blue Ridge, rolls across the Piedmont, and slips into the idyllic seashore of the Atlantic Coast. The Mountains-to-Sea Trail (MST) runs across this unique landscape. It is the scenic backbone of interconnected trails that spans the entire state, attempting to connect as many trail systems and natural scenic areas as practicable.
Most of us have used the Mountain-to-Sea Trail (MST) many times, and in the moment, have never fully realized it. Whether it was a stroll along the Eno River, a day hike up to catch Hanging Rock’s 360-degree vistas, or beachcombing on the shores of Fort Macon, chances are you’ve set foot on the trail. Simply put, the work of the Friends of the MST has made such adventures possible for many North Carolinians and visitors to our state. They link us to nature, strengthen our communities, preserve our natural resources, and so much more.
There is still work to be done though, and that is why we are proud to offer our support again this year with our seasonal Mountains-to-Sea Blend. For each bag sold, we will donate $1 to the Friends of the Mountains to Sea Trail. The Friends of Mountains-to-Sea Trail is a 501(c )(3) non-profit organization that relies on the support of the community and volunteers. With our help, they have been able to build a simple footpath into an extensive pathway, connecting North Carolina’s natural treasures for the enjoyment and education of people.
“The main purpose of the Mountains-to-Sea Trail is not to walk across the state of North Carolina; that’s a fringe benefit. The path’s largest impact is felt by individuals and families who transform their bodies, think through their though, and grapple honestly with their emotions on a section near their home. Long-distance hiking is a luxury but being able to recreate outdoors and enjoy natural areas is a necessity. It is what we were made to do. Regardless of whether you are walking across the state or hiking in your backyard, the Mountains-to-Sea Trail allows us to be who we are and discover who we can become.”
- JENNIFER PHARR DAVIS, RENOWNED AMERICAN HIKER
Regardless of your experience level - back country enthusiast or back porch appreciator - the greatness of the MST lies in the miles between each trail segment. It is both our privilege and responsibility to help preserve and maintain it. Mark your calendars for Saturday, September 8th! In celebration of the trail’s birthday, we will be raising funds across all our cafés, donating 5% of sales to the Friends of the Mountains-to-Sea.
